Many bilingual people tell me the same thing: “In English I can explain what’s happening to me, but in Spanish I feel it.” That’s no accident. The words we grew up with are often closely tied to our emotions and memories.
Language holds memory
Research with bilingual people suggests that memories feel more vivid when we tell them in the language we lived them in. If your childhood happened in Spanish, some experiences may be easier to reach, and to heal, in Spanish.
That’s why in bilingual therapy you can speak whichever language comes naturally in the moment. Some days it will be Spanish, other days English, and often a mix of both. All of it is welcome.
Not having to translate yourself
When you have to translate what you feel, something gets lost. Words like nervios, coraje, or desahogarse don’t have an exact English translation. With a therapist who understands your language and your culture, you don’t have to explain the basics. You can go straight to what matters.
Culture matters too
Bilingual therapy isn’t only about language. It’s also understanding what family means, respect for elders, religion, migration, or being the first generation in this country. Those experiences are part of your story and deserve a safe space.
How to get started
- Schedule a free 15-minute consultation. It’s a call to get to know each other and see if we’re a good fit, with no commitment.
- Ask about your insurance. I accept several plans, such as Aetna, Anthem, and Blue Shield, and I can also give you a receipt to request reimbursement.
- Online sessions throughout California and some in-person sessions in Hayward.
Asking for help is an act of courage. If any of this resonated with you, I’m here to walk alongside you.
